狂犬病病毒(rabies virus)是一種嗜神經病毒(neurotropic virus)，可導致人和動物患狂犬病。狂犬病的傳播可以通過動物的唾液(saliva)傳播，很少通過與人類唾液(saliva)接觸傳播。狂犬病病毒(abies virus)與許多彈狀病毒(rhabdoviruses)一樣，具有極其廣泛的宿主範圍。在野外發現它感染了許多哺乳動物物種(mammalian species)，而在實驗室中發現可以感染鳥類，以及哺乳動物(mammals)、鳥類(birds)、爬行動物(reptiles)和昆蟲(insects)的細胞培養物。狂犬病病毒(rabies virus)呈圓柱形(cylindrical morphology)，是彈狀病毒科狂犬病病毒屬的模式種。這些病毒有包膜(enveloped)，具有單鏈 RNA 基因組(single stranded RNA genome)，具有negative-sense。遺傳信息被包裝為核糖核蛋白複合物(ribonucleoprotein complex)，其中 RNA 與病毒核蛋白(viral nucleoprotein)緊密結合。該病毒的 RNA 基因組編碼五個基因，其順序高度保守(conserved)。這些基因編碼核蛋白 (nucleoprotein , N)、磷蛋白 (phosphoprotein , P)、基質蛋白 (matrix protein , M)、糖蛋白 (glycoprotein , G) 和病毒 RNA 聚合酶 (viral RNA polymerase , L)。完整的基因組序列長度為 11,615 到 11,966 nt。
