雞非哺乳類動物，和哺乳類抗原有高親和性，且避免和哺乳類抗原產生cross-reaction。為最人道的多株抗體產製方法。只需從雞蛋萃取蛋白，取樣方便，不傷害動物。每隻雞可以產生的抗體量約3 g IgY／月，是兔子的10-20倍多。且產製速度比起兔子快上許多，最快25天即可取得高力價（titer）抗體。雞IgY的Fc region和哺乳類IgG的不同：可降低對哺乳動物的背景值。不會活化哺乳類補補體系統。不會與哺乳類Fc recentors結合。無法和常規的protein A（Staphylococcus aureus）、protein G（Streptococcus sp.）、或protein L（Peptostreptococcus magnus）等免疫球蛋白－蛋白結合反應。由於IgY取得方便，雞蛋可以儲存較長的時間，並可純化取得較佳的titer。相對於兔子，雞的開銷較便宜。IgY有以下數種和哺乳類IgG類似的特徵：為二價體。可由papain分解成divalent Fab fragment。適用酵素、生物素（biotin）、金粒子等標定物。
