二氫睾酮（DHT）在androgen-sensitive雄激素敏感組織中，如前列腺中，表現高水平微粒體蛋白。編碼的蛋白質在酸性pH下具有活性，對4-azasteroid inhibitor finasteride具敏感性。該基因的缺陷可能導致雄性假性兩性，特別是假性陰道會陰性尿道下裂（PPSH）。類固醇5-α-還原酶，催化睾酮轉化為更有效的雄激素二氫睾酮（DHT）。該cDNA含有長3位非翻譯區，並編碼與人SRD5A1具有50％序列同一性的疏水性254-氨基酸蛋白與大鼠5-α-還原酶具有46％同一性。
